The Kids in Philanthropy Program of the Community Foundation Portage and District had a very successful pilot! In 2011/12 school year, five different project groups in four different middle year schools awarded $2500 in seven different grants to local charities.
Not only did the charities benefit; but project leaders, parents, and students gave very positive evaluation comments on the learning and leadership development that occurred. Our committee observed how committed and enthusiastic the students gave their message in student assemblies and to the media. We received initial positive endorsement from school administrators and the Board of Portage la Prairie School Division.
We invite your school to participate in the Kids in Philanthropy program for 2014-15. The program is flexible enough to allow either in class or elective groups. Single grades or multiple middle school grades can be involved.
The Community Foundation of Portage and District continues its commitment to support the KiP program with an annual funding of $3000 which will be dispersed in $500 allotments to six projects. These projects are facilitated by an online process from initial application to final review.
The program will challenge the students to get to know their community well enough to make an informed decision on how to grant their $500. Students are also encouraged to initiate their own fundraising to increase the amount of their grant. Students look at the composition of their community, the needs in the community and how those needs are being, or not being, met. They then need to prioritize and reach consensus before making their recommendation for their grant. Project leaders are able to match many of the key elements of the program with language arts and social studies curriculum.
If you are interested in the KiP program or have any questions, please contact the office at 204-856-1971. Application deadline is October 15th.
