Orest and Eva Shewchuk Bursary Fund

Orest and Eva ShewchukFor Orest and Eva Shewchuk, giving to the CFPD Permanent Endowment Fund is an annual occurrence. The Shewchuks have been steady contributors to the Foundation since they joined the Founder's Club back in 1995. They receive a lot of satisfaction knowing that the people in our area benefit from the projects that CFPD supports.

Orest and Eva arrived in Portage in 1961 and have lived here ever since, raising their two children and volunteering their time in the community. Orest retired several years ago from a 35 year career as a meteorologist. In the first 10 years he traveled the world, working in such places as France, Germany and Churchill and spent the last 25 years at the Southport Weather Office. He continues to be active working for community groups such as Save the CPR Station, the Portage Ukrainian Connection and St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Eva has recently retired from a long career with the Portage Library spanning 1968 to 2004. Trained as a librarian in England, she worked as a volunteer cataloguing the books and in 1972 was appointed by City Council to the Library Board, serving in various positions including chairperson for a number of years. She also worked part-time at Crescentview and Arthur Meighen school libraries. Eva is a strong supporter of both St. Nicolas Orthodox Church and the St. Mary's Anglican Church.

Orest and Eva said, "We wish to support future educational opportunities for students in the community" and decided to create 'The Orest and Eva Shewchuk Bursary Fund.' The purpose of the fund is to assist, each year, one Portage high school student who plans to pursue a career in education.

Their accumulated donations will start out the bursary fund with $3500 and in January 2005, they will top the fund to $5000, the amount required to be a named fund. The first bursary will be awarded in June of 2005. Orest and Eva intend to add to the fund each year, and as the fund grows so will the amount of the bursary. The Shewchuks will have the pleasure of presenting the first bursary in June 2005 and know that their fund will help many young people with their post secondary education now and well into the future.
