Dr. Donald William Rae Memorial Bursary Fund

Criteria

Purpose:
To assist one student each year in pursuing a career in Nursing, Medical Rehabilitation (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Repiratory Therapy), Pharmacy, Dentistry or Medicine.

Award: $1,000

Eligibility:
1. A graduate of a Portage la Prairie high school.
2. Currently registered or accepted, in any year of studies in the field of medicine e.g. Nursing, Medical Rehabilitation (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Pharmacy, Dentistry or Medicine etc
3. Consistently strong academic performance
4. Personal characteristics that exhibit compassion, integrity, service to the community, and leadership.

Application: Please submit a letter of request no later than May 15 with the following information:
1. Proof of registration or acceptance at a school
2. Scholastic performance and
3. Community service
4. Please include a written section for, “why should I be considered for this award.”

Donald William Rae O.C., C.D., M.D., F.C.F.P.

Donald William Rae, a long time resident of Portage la Prairie, passed away in Victoria BC on December 10, 1998 at the age of 67.

Born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan on April 10, 1931, he moved to Winnipeg in 1942, graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1957 with degrees in Science & Medicine and Doctor of Medicine. He went on to become a person of many accomplishments both in the field of medicine and public service.

Dr. Rae and his wife Lorraine moved to Portage la Prairie in 1957 where he worked as a family practitioner until June 1995. He designed coats of arms for: the City of Portage la Prairie, the Portage & District Hospital, the Faculty of Medicine (U of M) and the College of Family Physicians of Canada. In 1995, he and Lorraine were jointly honoured with the Citizen of the Year Award for outstanding service to their community. Recognized for excellence in 1992, Don was awarded the Provost Order of the Buffalo Hunt by the Province and later the same year, appointed an Officer in the Order of Canada.

Dr. Rae joined the RCN(R) in 1949 and served as a surgeon-lieutenant before transferring to the Militia, continuing as medical officer with the 26th Field Regiment RCA (M), the 17th Medical Company and the 13th Field Battery RCA (M). He retired in 1995 as the Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the 26th Field Regiment.

A most generous individual, Dr. Rae was an outstanding volunteer and a recipient of numerous awards recognizing his abilities, leadership qualities and contributions. He joined the St. John Ambulance Brigade in 1957, continuing to serve in many positions until his appointment as Chancellor of Venerable Order of St. John, the parent organization. He was not only a respected physician in his community but a noted academic and committed supporter of Family Medicine nationally and internationally. He joined the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 1958, served as Provincial Chapter President and during 1976-77, as National College President. He was also President of the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA) 1989-92. Dr. Rae visited 42 countries in the interest of developing health care programs abroad and within Canada.
