Charlie Oliver 4-H Fund

Charlie OliverCharles T. Oliver was a life long Portager, respected businessman and community leader. He was a true Portage promoter and volunteer worker. He spent over 50 years with the Portage Industrial Exhibition Association. Some of the other groups and activities in which he was involved included the 4H clubs, Portage Figure Skating, Manitoba Agriculture Society, Children's Aid Society, Portage Plains United Way, The Portage Elks Club and the Portage and District Hospital Board. When the opportunity arose to develop a foundation, Charlie was a member of the Steering Committee that wrote the Foundations bylaws. He was a generous supporter of the Foundation and became a Founding Member and continuing donor.

The " Charlie Oliver 4H Fund" was established with a gift from the estate of Charles T. Oliver. He had a long standing affection for the 4H movement that reflects his own rural roots. Since 1972, Charlie had sponsored a gold watch award for a senior 4H member from the Portage District who demonstrated outstanding achievement. The Charlie Oliver 4H Fund will ensure that this award will continue to recognize important 4H achievements.

Charlie was born February 11,1911. While he grew up on the farm in the Rignold area just west of Portage, Charlie made his career in the pharmacy business. He graduated from the University of Manitoba's faculty of pharmacy in 1934 and after a year of working in Winnipeg signed on at Hill's Drug Store in Portage. He served as President of the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association from 1958 to 1960 and was the first pharmacist to receive the Robin's Bowl of Hygeia for service to both the community and the profession. He passed away on January 14th 1999.
