Alice Mayor Bursary Fund

Alice MayorAlice Mayor has supported the Foundation since its inception and joined the “Founders Club” in 1995. On July 14, 2000 as a personal “Millennium Project,” Alice set up the Alice Mayor Bursary Fund which temporarily went under the name of the Portage Bursary Fund. She understands the heavy cost of attending university and decided she wanted to help students who are planning to further their studies after graduating from high school. The Foundation was the perfect vehicle for her philanthropic needs as her donation of $10,000 would remain forever in the “permanent endowment fund” and only the interest would be used to support the bursaries.

Two bursaries were created valued at $225 each, one for Portage Collegiate Institute and the other for Arthur Meighen High School. To be eligible to apply graduating students must have been involved in a visual arts or performing arts program and currently registered or accepted in a recognized post secondary school,.

Alice Mayor is a life long resident of the Portage la Prairie area who worked at a men's clothing store called "Narvey's” for many years and then was a familiar face at Safeway until her retirement. She is a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church and after her retirement, she became actively involved at the Herman Prior Centre and sang with the Senior Choir.

Alice has created a wonderful legacy that will help young people year after year.
