The General Education Bursary Fund

The Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Building Incentive Program provides $100,000 annually for five years to Manitoba community foundations for building scholarship and bursary funds. The program was launched in July 2005.

In the fall of 2005, money from the Elma Slack Estate provided $10,000 to form the base of the Elma Slack Bursary Fund. The Manitoba Government match was $6,124, an increase of 67% bringing the Fund to $16,124. In August 2005 another $7,850 (residue from her estate) was added to the Fund making a new total of $23,974. As of December 31, 2006, market value was $25,498. The match for the $7,850 comes to 27.9% in year two equalling $2,192. This amount will be added to the Fund in February 2007.

The bursary is awarded to a Portage area high school student. The recipient must be facing the added financial burden of relocating his or her residence to a different community in order to pursue his or her academic studies. The first bursary for $475 was awarded to Anneliese Schoppe in June 2006. The bursary for 2007 will have a value of $900.

In 2006, CFPD created the bursary fund called The General Education Bursary Fund with $2,150. In February 2007 the MB Government will add $600 to the fund.

CFPD embraces the new bursary program and invites others to start up their own bursary fund; a minimum of $2,000 is required. Your bursary fund is eligible for the matching government dollars that will be prorated and added to your new fund in February of the next year.
