At the 2005 Annual Report Presentation, Ray Johnson, Co-chair of the PCI Reunion Committee, announced the creation of the Portage Collegiate Institute Alumni Fund with CFPD. He said, “Proceeds from high school reunions in 1994 and 1995, and corporate sponsorships from last year’s reunion were used to create the Fund.” The Fund has a balance of $85,034. Another $15,000 has been put in a managed fund called the Portage Collegiate Institute Alumni Managed Fund and will be used as seed money for the next reunion.
The interest earned from the two named funds will go towards bursaries and scholarships. PCI Administration and the PCI Awards Committee will decide on the number of scholarships, their size and criteria.
Members of the PCI Reunion Committee are Co-chairs Dave Gair, Ray Johnson, Ryan Muirhead, Treasurer Doug Simpson and PCI Principal Jim Pehura.
Anyone can add to either fund to increase the value of the awards. CFPD will issue receipts valid for income tax purposes for all charitable donations to the Funds.
Arthur Meighen High School Farewell Scholarship/Bursary Fund
The AMHS Farewell Reunion Committee is leaving a legacy for local students. The Committee took $20,000 of the proceeds from the Arthur Meighen High School Reunion to establish with the Community Foundation of Portage and District (CFPD) a named fund called the Arthur Meighen High School Farewell Scholarship/Bursary Fund. Chair Jocelyne Durand said “the money was raised through the sales of tickets and donations from the farewell held this past summer”.
In November the official papers were signed and the criteria set for the award. A graduate of Portage Collegiate Institute who is pursuing some form of post-secondary education is eligible to apply. The recipient must be a former student or a descendant of a student or staff who attended, worked, or taught at AMHS between the years of 1965 to June of 2006.
The $20,000 was added to the endowment fund and only the interest it generates will be used for the award. CFPD President Ernie Shwaluk said “the first bursary will be handed out in June 2007.” As the fund will be just six months old at that time, the first scholarship/bursary will be worth $350. The following year the fund will generate $700 for the award.
