Arthur Meighen High School Farewell Scholarship/Bursary Fund

AMHS
Arthur Meighen High School Farewell Jocelyn Durand, Chair of the AMHS Farewell Committee, hands a cheque to CFPD President Ernie Shwaluk while Treasurers’ Henry Riendeau and Shelley Anderson sign the fund documents.

The AMHS Farewell Reunion Committee is leaving a legacy for local students. The Committee took $20,000 of the proceeds from the Arthur Meighen High School Reunion to establish with the Community Foundation of Portage and District (CFPD) a named fund called the Arthur Meighen High School Farewell Scholarship/Bursary Fund. Chair Jocelyne Durand said “the money was raised through the sales of tickets and donations from the farewell held this past summer”.

In November 2006 the official papers were signed and the criteria set for the award. A graduate of Portage Collegiate Institute who is pursuing some form of post-secondary education is eligible to apply. The recipient must be a former student or a descendant of a student or staff who attended, worked, or taught at AMHS between the years of 1965 to June of 2006.

The $20,000 was added to the endowment fund and only the interest it generates will be used for the award. As the fund was only six months old at that time, the first scholarship/bursary worth $350 was awarded to Bobbi Yaremchuk. In the future the fund will generate $700 for the award. Anyone can add to the fund to increase the value of the award. A $1,000 annual scholarship requires $28,580 in contributed capital, based on the 3.5% disbursement quota that is set by Revenue Canada. If you are interested in helping to build the fund, CFPD issues receipts for income tax purposes for all donations.
