School Division
Signing of the 10 Fund Agreements: Finance Neill Corrigan, Shirley Case, Superintendent Larry Taylor, School Board Chair Charles Morrison, CFPD President Vern Crandell, CFPD Awards Committee Chair Rae Thomson, CFPD Treasurer John Chapman

The Community Foundation of Portage and District President Vern Crandell and Treasurer John Chapman met with Portage School Division Superintendent Larry Taylor and Finance Neill Corrigan to sign 10 Fund Agreements on Tuesday, December 2, 2008

The School Board Chairperson Charles Morrison is pleased with the transfer of the awards, scholarship and bursary funds to the care of the Community Foundation. He said “this is a positive move, noting the Division likes to partner with local organizations.” President Crandell says he is thrilled with the transfer. He stated that CFPD has the responsibility of looking after a variety of named funds within the permanent Endowment Fund for individuals, families and businesses. The 10 awards valued at about $159,000 will be added to the Endowment Fund and to the list of 16 funds that already support awards, bursaries and scholarships. The criteria set at the time of the creation of the awards by family members and friends remain the same. Those involved have been informed of the transfer to CFPD. The cash value of the awards has been adjusted to meet the 3.5% disbursement quote set by Canada Revenue Agency.

Some of the awards have increased in size; two were reduced to sustain the principal in perpetuity. Among the funds transferred are: Virgil Homes Memorial Bursary, Cameron J. Hoover Memorial Bursary, Nell Owens Award for Excellence in Writing, Margaret Webster Memorial Bursary Fund. Son George Richardson added $500 to Reita Richardson Memorial Award Fund to meet the criteria for a CFPD named fund; a minimum balance of $5,000 is required. Shirley Case contacted the communities Clubs that established the Salem and Curtis-Ridge Community Club Bursary to bring the fund up to just over $14,000 to sustain a $500 bursary. She said, “It means a lot knowing this fund will help students for many years to come.”

As three funds had a spend-down arrangement with the School Division, some of the principal each year is used to meet the bursary amount until the fund is depleted. Funds included are: the Walter Richard Bell Memorial Bursary Fund, Nelson Vianzon Memorial Bursary Fund and the Poplar Point Scholarship Fund.

As with other CFPD award funds, in June of each year CFPD will issue a cheque to the Portage Collegiate Institute to cover the amount of the awards. The PCI Awards Committee selects the worthy students whether it is for a bursary, scholarship or honour.

One fund created in 2001 recently received an infusion of funds from a bequest of a very close friend. The Dr. Harvey Hassard Memorial Bursary Fund will be awarded to a graduate of PCI registered in any year of study in Pharmacy, Laboratory Technology, Radiology, Dentistry, Medicine or Medical Rehabilitation. Annually CFPD’s application deadline will be May 15 for the $2,000 bursary.

In the future, the School Division requests that families or friends who wish to setup a bursary or scholarship fund in memory of an individual please contact CFPD at 274-2442. Executive Director Karen Braden will be pleased to work with you to set the criteria and create the fund. Also Braden says that anyone can add to an existing bursary or scholarship funds at any time to honour a loved one and increase the size of the award.

The Portage Lions Club Treasurer Ray George presents a cheque to CFPD’s Treasurer John Chapman while Lions Club President Tom Street, Secretary Al Lightfoot and CFPD’s President Vernon Crandell sign the official documents to establish the Portage la Prairie Lions Club Fund.

“The $50,000 used to establish CFPD’s first Donor Advised Fund was an accumulation of dollars the Lions Club raised over time.” said Tom Street, “The Club wanted to do something special with the money and after much research decided to start a named fund with CFPD.” Vern Crandell stated: “The Lions Club wishes to have an input in the decision regarding the recipients of the interest income generated from their gift to CFPD. On an annual basis, CFPD will inform the Club the amount available for distribution.” The Lions Advisory Committee will recommend the intended recipient organizations. CFPD will honour the donor’s wishes as long as the recipients are registered charitable organization with Revenue Canada. Each year the Lions Club and CFPD will jointly present the grants.

How to Access Funding Information on the Portage Regional Library Computers

In 2007, CFPD partnered with the Portage la Prairie Regional Library to provide online the Imagine Canada’s Canadian Directory to Foundations and Corporations. Charities and not-for-profit organization may access the Directory on the Library computers to search for much needed funding for their projects. Just click the link on the Library's computers and it will take you to the site. If in doubt ask someone at the counter to help you.

The Canadian Directory to Foundations & Corporations is Canada’s largest and most accurate bilingual fundraising database. They have more than 3,100 foundation listings, more than 150 corporations and over 90,000 indexed grants.

The Directory is used by almost every successful fundraiser in the country. Get access to the specific information you need without wading through unnecessary or hard-to-find data. Categories are clearly designed for easy access to every grantmaker’s funding interests as well as their listed grants. Conveniently searchable categories represent every type of charitable activity from Arts to Zoos.

As the Directory is updated every week, you benefit from the latest information available.

CFPD is renewing the licence for the online program for another year. Imagine Canada will monitor the sites to see if organizations are accessing funding information. In November 2009, CFPD will decide if the service is valuable to not for profit organization.

Many projects initiated by local community groups need more funding than CFPD can provide. Often having the support of CFPD, you can leverage funding from other funders, so we encourage organizations to search for additional funds.
